R’ Dovid Lowy
Here we are again… another פסח. We have the מצוה to tell the same story time and time again. We were enslaved, ה' performed miracles, and took us out of מצרים. The question that one must ask is מה נשתנה הלילה הזה מכל הלילות, why is this night so different? What are we expected to gain this year from the story that we didn’t gain last year? Not only that, but all year long there’s a מצוה to say קריאת שמע and in שמע we mention that ה' took us out of מצרים. Besides, if we look closely, we might notice that many of the מצות we do are related to יציאת מצרים in one way or another. Why do we need to make an entire יום טוב called פסח where we tell over the story which we are already quite familiar with?
What we have to realize is that on פסח we aren’t just retelling the story, rather we are supposed to be feeling the story. What we know intellectually, now has to be felt. It’s for this reason that חז"ל say אפילו כולנו חכמים כולנו נבונים, everyone is still obligated in telling over the story because the goal is not an intellectual one. We are all aware that it is often times difficult to internalize the things we already know in our heads. In fact, isn’t that what מוסר is all about?
On פסח we try to reach a level where we feel our אמונה in ה'! We try to reach a level of אמונה פשוטה, which can be misunderstood to mean simple אמונה, as if to say that we are not intelligent enough to understand our Judaism. However, אמונה פשוטה really means that my אמונה is so clear that it is פשוט to me. I walk around with clarity and more importantly the feeling of my אמונה being a reality.
My ברכה to all is that we should merit this פסח to internalize and feel our leaving מצרים like never before!
